Museums and châteaux are overflowing with prestigious furniture with flourishing marquetry, dazzling bronzes and breathtaking mechanisms. But what is the public perception of these absolute masterpieces? They are appreciated as “beautiful”, but are often considered “dull”. Sometimes quite out of sight, behind a cordon, they remain inaccessible and no one can touch or even open them. Only a privileged few are allowed this supreme right.
So how can visitors really appreciate what they cannot see? Understand a mechanism, discover the original vibrant colours of a marquetry piece? How do you generate interest in this “sleeping” furniture?
With this in mind, I set up ExploVision, a company specialising in the reconstruction and digital enhancement of furniture heritage. My aim is to make it possible to discover and manipulate masterpieces of museum furniture through faithful and detailed 3D reconstructions. Presented on a specially developed interactive interface, the 3D models can be viewed online or on touchscreen terminals located near the masterpieces.
This work is aimed not only at the public and visitors to the museum, but also at researchers and heritage curators, who can use this database to study and compare these masterpieces from a distance for their work.
