The challenges of sound mediation within a collector’s item

Tuesday 25 March 2025 | 11:30 - Soufflot pitch room
The Air and Space Museum presents to the public many aircraft from its collections. Several of them can be visited by the public and have mediation inside.
Among them, the Douglas C-47 Skytrain known as "Dakota" evokes the parachute drops of the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. A sound animation had existed since 2005 inside this plane in order to introduce the public to this moment in history. In 2024, the 80th anniversary of the Landing was an opportunity to reflect on the redesign of this animation. The question of a technical improvement was raised in line with more general reflections on the sensory discovery of the plane. The museum wanted to strengthen the visitor experience on board with a more in-depth sound immersion, in order to make visitors understand, but also feel the conditions of the parachutists within such a plane, all while respecting the rules of the heritage code in a collector's item.
