Interest and impact of preliminary and acceptance studies on exhibition design and evaluation: the “Cancers” exhibition at the Cité des Sciences et de l’industrie

Thursday 04 April 2024 | 10:30
For a year, the "Cancers" exhibition at the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie invited the public to explore in depth the science behind the fight against cancer. Designed to be accessible to all, it sought to demystify this complex condition by highlighting recent breakthroughs in research, treatment and prevention strategies. Visitors were guided on an educational journey from the basic biology of cancer to its impact on society, illustrated by interactive features, poignant testimonials and crystal-clear presentations. The exhibition also highlighted the crucial importance of prevention and screening, offering practical tools for everyday action.

To develop this ambitious project and measure its impact on the public, the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie called on the expertise of the Gece research institute. Between 2020 and 2023, a traditional yet innovative approach to qualitative research was implemented before and throughout the exhibition to measure visitor perceptions.

During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to meet Olivier Allouard, Director of the Gece research institute, Claire-Marie Levêque, Head of Qualitative Research at Gece, as well as Maud Gouy, exhibition co-curator, and Julien Thiburce, researchers in language sciences at the ICAR laboratory (ENS de Lyon). They will share with you the methodologies employed and discuss the influence these studies had on the conception and success of the exhibition.
