Museums and LGBT+ audiences

In April 2013, France passed the law extending marriage to same-sex couples, marking the culmination of a particularly lively public debate. Although society is adapting logically to this development, giving greater visibility to LGBT+ people, especially in pop culture and audiovisual, French museums are shy to enter this field, unlike some of their foreign counterparts.

However, doesn’t the museum – “in the service of society and its development”, as defined by ICOM – play a vital role in the way our culture is built?

SITEM, the leading trade show for the cultural ecosystem, produced by Museumexperts, seemed to be an appropriate forum for consideration and discussions on the issue of inclusion.

Moderated by Bernard Hasquenoph, journalist-blogger and founder of Louvre pour tou.te.s, this discussion will address museums’ relationships with LGBT+ audiences.

It will present feedback on French and international museum initiatives that encourage going beyond heteronormativity in terms of discourse, looks and practices, with respect for all.
