In 2021 Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen will open, the first art storage facility in the world that offers access to a museum’s complete collection. The Depot is developed and funded in a Public Private Participation  The building is designed by MVRDV architects and will be situated directly next to the museum at Museumpark in Rotterdam. The large mirroring bowl-shaped building will contain 151.000 art works from the museum’s collection, but also offers storage spaces, with adjacent presentation rooms, for private collectors. In addition, there will be conservation studios, film cabins, presentation rooms and a spectacular atrium with glass showcases offering the public an overview of the diversity of the collection. Visitors will be able to wander through the building independently or take guided tours. The rooftop terrace and restaurant is accessible free of charge through an express lift.

In Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen visitors will be able to engage with the collection, relate to their own identity as collectors, and learn more about what it means to take care of a valuable art works. At Sitem, managing director Ina Klaassen and head of collections and research Sandra Kisters will discuss this new museum typology, the financial aspects and function of the Depot and connect this to the current renovation plans and future developments of the museum.
